December 2015

Hello,

We have had a smashing summer with visits to many places.

Southampton – Sea City

Poole – RNLI

Selbourne – Gilbert White and Captain Oats.. Great house and garden and museum.

Bucklers Hard – A good day out and interesting boat ride.

Visits to gardens (with teas). Country walks and pub meals all added to a good Summer.

We started our Autumn talks.

We found out about Ian Fleming and James Bond, had a Tour of the Universe, and toured the Channel Islands.

We met bats and saw how tiny they are,

Found out that whatever you do it is impossible to stop floods if we build in the wrong place.

The talk about artist David Roberts was real eye opener. He was a brilliant artist but is not very well known. We saw examples of his work.

The eleventh of November found us learning about Donald Campbell, his lifestyle and temperament. He was a very determined man in everything he did.

“Sugar and Spice” gave me a surprise to find the different counties that were involved in the slave trade. On a sweeter note we found out that the sugar from beet and from cane was exactly the same in their content of sucrose.

We closed the Autumn series with a super talk on Turkey and the parts that are not on the Cruise ships itinerary.

WHY NOT COME AND JOIN US

Our Spring programme start in January.

40 YEAR CELEBRATION AT CANFORD MAGNA GOLF CLUB

The group was formed under its original name BOURNEMOUTH LOCAL STUDIES GROUP in 1972 so 2012 is our 40th anniversary, it was decided to hold a celebratory lunch to honour this mile stone.

We held this at the Canford Magna Golf Club on Wednesday October 24th.We had a superb meal in a private dining room kindly set aside for us.

Everyone who was able to attend said it was a perfect way to celebrate our Ruby Anniversary. It gave the opportunity for new and long standing members to get to know one another and relax in the wonderful surroundings.

We were fortunate to have amongst us some of the original members who set up the group all those years ago and we all look forward to continuing
with the same ideas, ethos and aims as before.
